Technical Tips

The front disc brake system consists of: • The DISC which is bolted to the wheel hub • The CALIPER, which houses the brake pistons and is attached to the car suspension • The BRAKE PADS which fit into the caliper • The HYDRAULIC SYSTEM which is a closed system.
• Pedal pressure applied is transferred through brake fluid via master cylinder/booster though steel pipework towards the brake calipers • Pistons located in the calipers push against brake pad resulting in the pad pressing against the disc • As the brake pads wear it is normal for the brake fluid…
Inspection of Brake Fluid • Clear (fluid in good condition) • Muddy Brown/Black (old /dirty fluid ) • Recommended replacement every 2 years/ or refer to car manufacturer recommendation • It is NORMAL for the brake fluid level to drop as pad wears • It is NOT RECOMMENDED that brake…
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR FITMENT • Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground and supported by axle stands. DO NOT WORK ON VEHICLE IF IT IS BEING SUPPORTED BY A LIFTING JACK! • Before starting, it is advised that a clean cloth or rag be placed over the brake fluid reservoir…
DELAMINATION Symptom Insufficient braking, squeal, brake shudder Condition Delamination Cause Excessive heat, adhesive failure, incorrect fitment, damaged during fitment Solution Replace pads   GLAZED Symptom Squeal, reduced stopping power Condition Glazed Pads Cause Excessive heat during bedding, brake fluid /grease smear during fitment or from hydraulic system. Solution Replace pads…
RUST ON DISC Symptom Vibration, noise, Squeal Condition Rust on discs Cause Mostly occurs when vehicles stand for a long period of time Solution Clean off rust, machine discs if there are deep pit marks or replace discs. Replace brakes pads if necessary     RIDGE ON DISCS Symptom Squeal,…
Inspection of the CALIPERS • Check for leaks and condition of seals • Check if CALIPER SLIDE PINS are in good condition? • Check if PISTON moves freely in the Caliper? • Check RETAINING BOLT HEADS for damage • Replace damaged or worn parts   CALIPER SEALS Inspection of the…
